CANstruction Raleigh 2016 Theme Announced

For those of you who haven’t heard of CANstruction, now is a great time to catch up on this amazing event. We are happy to announce that this year’s theme is Heroes!

8 teams will be building and participating with First Friday, April 1st as they have in year’s past. Heroes-themed builds will range from Mighty Mouse and Captain America to Firefighters and Astronauts!  CANstruction has partnered with several amazing businesses such as Red Hat, Citrix, and Alfred Williams who are all teaming up with firms to help support the build monetarily and host the structure.  Your participation is key! The Scavenger Hunt this year will include stops at the Contemporary Art Museum, The Convention Center, Capital Bank Plaza, Red Hat, Citrix, and Alfred Williams. They have raised over 40,000 cans and will be donating around 35,000 lbs of food to the food bank in April.

Just imagine over 40,000 cans of food being recreated into the following:

  • Space Shuttle / Astronaut (30th Anniversary of Challenger) by DudaPaine
  • Mighty Mouse by Smith Sinnett/Wake Tech
  • Fireman’s Hat by Gensler/LHC Structural Engineers
  • World Trade Center Memorialby LS3P/Stroud Pence
  • Military / Superman by FDH Velocital
  • R2D2 by Flad Architects
  • Baymax by Clark Nexsen and Red Hat
  • Captain America by JDavis

CANstruction held a competition open to the children of families served by the Salvation Army, one of the many places supported by the Food Bank.  They hosted them at the Salvation Army’s new facility on Capital Blvd. for pizza, craft time, and super hero dress-up on February 17th from 6-8pm. Their task was to draw a picture of their hero and tell us how their hero would fight hunger.  The designs will be formatted and printed on the front of the CANstruction t-shirts this year!  Marbles Kid’s Museum graciously provided enough passes for all the children and their families served by the Salvation Army to visit Marbles (children ages 8 under) and IMAX theater (children ages 9 and older).
