LORD Corporation, a global leader in highly reliable adhesives, coatings, motion management devices and sensing technologies, announced it will host educators on Wednesday, July 15 as part of the Wake County Education Partnership (WakeEd)’s inaugural SummerSTEM program, intended to inspire STEM-related lesson plans in North Carolina classrooms. The event will take place at the LORD world headquarters in Cary, North Carolina.
The theme for the event is “Cross-Collaboration,” focusing on the importance of working across cross-functional teams to take a product from the idea to its launch. The educators will be welcomed with an orientation led by members of LORD senior leadership, followed by facility tours and technical demonstrations. A panel of directors and managers from across the business will lead a discussion on cross-divisional collaboration.
“As part of our commitment to Corporate Citizenship, we welcome educators from across Wake County to experience cross-collaboration at LORD,” said Ed Auslander, president and CEO, LORD Corporation. “Using innovative approaches to bring STEM into the classroom is a critical step toward developing a skilled workforce and improving North Carolina’s standing in the global economy.”
WakeEd is a nonprofit organization that engages businesses to help create educational excellence for all students in the Wake County Public School System. This is the inaugural year of WakeEd’s SummerSTEM program, which is designed to help educators gain understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in STEM careers. Six companies across Wake County, including LORD, will share strategies and work-based practices as a catalyst for educators to develop classroom curriculum that has direct relevance to the workplace.
“Preparing students for productive citizenship as well as higher education or a career is the most important goal of our schools,” WakeEd President Steve Parrott said. “How can our teachers prepare students for future jobs without knowing how the curriculum connects to the workplace? SummerSTEM supports our Wake County Public School System teachers by providing professional development in project-based learning and immersing them in real world experiences at STEM companies throughout the Triangle.”
LORD partners with educational organizations in the U.S. and globally with K-12 and higher education programs that promote the principles of STEM, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.
LORD recently received the 2015 Business and Industry Award in Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) Education from the North Carolina SMT Education Center for its efforts to strengthen educational programs across the state. In North Carolina, LORD implements educational programs to promote the active engagement of students in STEM activities, including co-teaching programs, student internships, summer externships for teachers from Wayne School of Engineering, Wake NC State STEM Early College High School, and other area schools, mentoring programs and more.
