This fall the Meadowmont Village shopping center in Chapel Hill will be home to the second OrangeTheory Fitness location in the Triangle. The pre-sale location is open now to introduce people to the Orangetheory Fitness concept and, most importantly, let members secure their memberships and packages at reduced founders’ rates available only before the studio opens.
We had the opportunity to speak with local franchise owner, Kristie Shifflette, about the new location and her goals are for the future of OTF in the Triangle.
RH: Since opening, what successes have you seen or have surprised you?
KS: I would say that my absolute favorite thing that has been the most rewarding as a business owner are the stories that our members are telling us. Not just about the results they are seeing but the way those results are making them feel. For example, we’ve had a member that’s come to my location that’s lost 16 pounds in four months and more importantly than the weight loss – she has actually totally eliminated blood markers for heart attacks and strokes. She pulled me aside and said, “Thank you so much for the way you are changing my life.” It’s not just about physical appearance; I know people care about that but it’s also so much more than just a number on a scale. It’s about changing how your health is improving, how you are going to be there longer for your kids. It’s so validating, so rewarding that it brings me back to why we got into this business in the first place.
RH: It really is amazing to see those types of results in such a short amount of time! Since opening in Morrisville what kick started the plans to open up a second location?
KS: When we first signed on with OrangeTheory about a year ago we had the intention of opening several locations. My husband and I knew that we wanted to do 3, 4 or possibly 5 [locations]. So just the way the real estate market is in the Triangle it’s just very tight so we’ve had to cast the net pretty wide in working with our real estate broker just to make sure that we’re finding the perfect locations and we never know where it’s going to turn up. We really need it to be a convenient location for people with ample parking and what not. We knew we wanted to do more locations it was just a matter of finding that perfect real estate and that’s what propelled the development of that [Chapel Hill] Studio.
RH: So Chapel Hill just happened to be the right time for that location?
KS: Right, we actually live in Chapel Hill which was definitely a nice benefit, it obviously wasn’t a pre-requisite but we know that market is ready for it and we’ve had a really good start to our pre-sale efforts over there.
RH: You mentioned before that you guys have always thought of doing several locations, are there any other areas that we can expect to see the OrangeTheory logo on some buildings on around the Triangle?
KS: We have some groups that are planning to develop around the Triangle and those should be announced within the next 3-6 months.
RH: As far as your target clients and customers, who are you really trying to bring into your doors?
KS: What I’ve learned is that while we have our “core” customer demographic, I have seen all walks of life come in and that has honestly been one of the most rewarding things about what we’re doing. There are people of all ages, sizes, fitness abilities and injuries – it truly is so effective for anybody. In terms of our “core” customers, a majority of them are between the ages of 28-55. About 70% of that group is female, not for any particular reason other than that’s just how it falls… We’ve got professional athletes, we’ve got Iron Man athletes, we’ve got everything from the best of the best to people who have just not worked out in years. This is for people who want results, not just a gym where you go and you have access to something – this is more goal oriented.
RH: What are the benefits of being a member of OTF?
KS: Other than being results driven as we talked about, this is a workout that’s led by skilled instructors. OrangeTheory Fitness participants are using a variety of equipment (treadmills, rowing machines, suspension training, free weights, etc.) and they are burning up to 1,000 calories per class. The other thing they are getting is that this is backed by the science of EPOC [excess post-exercise oxygen consumption], where the result is the orange effect or after-burn. You get more energy, physical toning and extra core burn for up to 36 hours post-workout.
RH: For optimal results, how often would you say someone should be coming for a class/session?
KS: You can get results from 2-4 sessions a week. I would say depending on how quickly you want results or really what your goals are 3-4 sessions is ideal, that’s what most people are aiming for – that 3-4 or every other day. That’s really the sweet spot.
RH: Since there are now multiple locations in the Triangle, can members use or transfer their memberships between the two locations?
KS: Absolutely! They can use their memberships anywhere in the country. It’s meant to make it really easy for members. We take care of all of that on the back end – so if you sign up at Morrisville or Chapel Hill and you travel for business to Atlanta (for example), you can use your OrangeTheory membership there without any extra cost. Just go up and say “Hi, I’m a member in Morrisville (or other location) can you sign me up for a class?”.
RH: With all the stuff you guys are doing, what direction do you see OrangeTheory Fitness heading in the Triangle over next few years?
KS: I would say that the Triangle area residents should expect to have at least 5 open locations within 2 years.
RH: As a local business owner, what advice would you give to new entrepreneurs in the area who are trying to build up their own businesses?
KS: Before you go live or start to rent anywhere, you need to get a good plan in place. You need to think about the people you are hiring, hire and train your key people early in the process so you have a good team and they are sharing the vision and communicating to get your name out there. Especially for something that’s new to the market. We’re still new, many people haven’t heard of OrangeTheory so that pre-planning is so key. [Ask yourself] Who are your key people? What is your message? Who are your customers? Where do your customers live? Where do they work? Where do they shop? Knowing where your customers are, knowing what your marketing plan is and really thinking about all of the pieces together before you are paying rent is going to set you up for success.
