On a rainy Friday October evening there were sunny smiles all around the OrangeTheory Fitness Morrisville studio. Why? Because the folks from both of the Morrisville and Chapel Hill locations presented Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina with a check for $2349.20. Location owners Kristie and Matt Shifflette are advocates of community involvement and jumped at the opportunity to give back.
“Our awesome members got on board!” shared Studio Manager, Stephanie Foster, “They love a good challenge so we wrapped our minds around the whole fundraising idea and how we can raise the most funds in the most fun way where [workout] results are going to be beneficial to the members.”
Participants could run for distance to pledge per mile, row for distance to pledge per meter or lose weight to pledge per pound lost. Katie, Studio Manager at the Chapel Hill location and biggest fundraiser for the Wellness for Wishes campaign, ran 100 miles on the treadmill during her OTF workouts earning $700 in pledges in just 5 weeks.
This year Make-A-Wish® Eastern NC has a goal of granting 210 wishes in 49 counties on the eastern side of the state. Thanks to all of the hard work put into Wellness for Wishes, Make-A-Wish® Eastern NC is now one step closer to granting another wish for a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition.
“We grant wishes for children between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 years old” explains Jerry Peters, VP of Brand Advancement at Make-A-Wish® Eastern NC, “These are children that are dealing with very adult-like issues. A lot of times because of their condition, they are removed from their schools, churches or families because they are having to deal with this [illness] all the time.”
As mentioned on their website, the mission of this Make-A-Wish® Eastern NC chapter is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Often times we forget the bigger picture in the stories we hear about children with life-threatening illnesses, we do not always think about the pieces of their childhood lost, or the financial cost and emotional toll it can take on parents or even the child’s siblings. The wishes they grant not only provide children with motivation and enthusiasm to get through their next treatment or test but it gives the entire family an opportunity to come together, bond and heal.
