The Pitchin’ for Wishes Cornhole Tourney offers fun for the whole family at Midtown Park in North Hills on Oct. 10. The entry fee for a two-person team is $50 and goes directly to Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina. If you prefer to watch, Pitchin’ for Wishes is free for spectators and offers activities for all ages.

Hosted by Andrew Roby, Inc. and The Select Group, Pitchin’ for Wishes will feature children’s activities such as a bouncy house, face painter and a magician, Ramseses from UNC, Mr. Wolf from N.C. State, Wool E. Bull from the Durham Bulls and Star Wars characters provided by the 501st Legion costuming organization will all make special appearances. Doc-Barker, a Chocolate Labrador Retriever and Make-A Wish® canine ambassador, will also be in attendance. Doc-Barker is unique because he is not only a mobility service dog for his owner Sherry Buchbinder, he is also a registered therapy dog.

Sure to be a highlight of the event is Liam Canard, a 14-year-old Wake County resident who has Hodgkins Lymphoma. Liam’s wish for a backyard batting cage became a reality last month.

“This tournament is really about granting wishes of deserving kids like Liam,” said Will McKendry, vice president of Andrew Roby’s Triangle division. “It’s a team effort to reach our fundraising goal. To help grant wishes for kids with serious illnesses in the Triangle, we’ll need cornhole competitors, event volunteers and donations from the community.”

One of the highpoints of the event is the raffle, and this year’s prizes feature Wolf Gourmet toaster and blender, both courtesy of Sub-Zero Wolf and a set of cornhole boards and bags from Andrew Roby.

While this is only the second year for Pitchin’ for Wishes in Raleigh, the annual cornhole tournament has been held in other cities in N.C. for the last eight years, and has raised more than $1 million for local charities. It has also set records as the largest cornhole tournament in the world.

Pitchin’ for Wishes is from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., rain or shine. The first-place team wins $750, the second-place team wins $250, and every participant gets a T-shirt. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their lives with hope, strength and joy at a time when they need it most. For many, it marks a turning point in their fight against their illness. The average cost to grant a child’s wish through Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina is $7,500. The organization will grant 200 wishes this year, but there are more than 200 eligible children waiting for their wishes.
